On October 28, a methane explosion occurred at the Kostenko coal mine in the Karaganda region, which killed 46 people. The accident occurred at a depth of 700 meters, its shock wave spread over a distance of more than two kilometers. This affected not only the area of the accident, but also neighboring areas.
The Karaganda regional branch of the Red Crescent of Kazakhstan organized a visit to the emergency site on the same day; for coordinated actions to respond to the accident, interaction was established with local authorities and emergency services in the first hours. Volunteer psychologists were mobilized and, together with emergency services psychologists, provided psychological assistance to the families of the victims.
Also, as part of the response to the emergency situation, the Red Crescent of Kazakhstan, together with DOSCAR GROUP, will provide additional assistance to the families of the deceased miners. Each family will receive support in the amount of 1 million tenge. These funds will allow families who have lost their breadwinners to cover their essential needs, as well as pay for services that may not be covered by other relief agencies.
“This tragedy shocked us, and we, as a humanitarian organization, are doing everything possible to provide all possible assistance to the families of those killed and injured as a result of the explosion at the Kostenko mine. On behalf of the Red Crescent and on my own behalf, I would like to express my deepest condolences to the families of the victims, and also wish a speedy recovery to those injured. In addition, I sincerely thank every Kazakhstani who supported our call for help,” says the President of the Red Crescent of Kazakhstan, E.K. Argymbaev.
